County Releases First Phase of  Population Projections Project Data

Rockland County Projections Methodology Summary

The Planning Department’s Population Projections project has resulted in the development of a set of county population projections that provide information for Rockland County from 2005 to the year 2035. These projections, which were developed by the Program on Applied Demographics at Cornell University through a contract with the County of Rockland, were prepared through two inter-dependent phases that relied on separate methodologies for county and sub-county projections. The results of this project provide information on basic demographic characteristics including population, age, sex, households and housing units.

These County population, household and housing projections are not predictions of future population, household and housing size and composition, but rather are projections illustrating the impact of recent rates of population change, housing change and demographic characteristic shares. Rockland's population has been projected using current life expectancy and survival rates, fertility rates and rates of net migration. Rockland's household and housing unit projections are driven by the size of the household population and its age and sex composition, as well as housing unit change and capacity based on current zoning.

Although this project has provided results to 2035 for the purposes of long-range planning, it is recommended that data users exercise caution when working with data from the outer limit of the time horizon. As with any long-range projections, uncertainty grows with the time horizon and the results may become less reliable the further you extend from the 2005 base year.

Currently, only countywide results from this project are available, while sub-county results are expected to be released by September 2010.
