Safer on the Road

For most Rocklanders, personal automobiles are the first choice for transportation. Some residents have never tried the public transportation systems and, for others, public transportation is not even a viable option.

Consequently, there are a lot of cars on our roads and we have to ask the question: How safe are you from other drivers on the roads of Rockland? For that matter, how safe is your own driving?

Several agencies and departments in Rockland County have formed a consortium to provide answers to the safe driver questions. Nearly 30% of all those of driving age in Rockland are 55 and older. Although many have outstanding driving safety records, others may be at risk for a variety of reasons. The solution is not to stop driving at a specific age because there is no specific age. There are better remedies to the mobility issue, such as, driving evaluations of each questionable driver, modifications to automobiles, or refresher driving courses.

The Consortium assumes that older adults are conscientious and responsible drivers. If made aware of poor driving practices, most would make efforts to remedy the problem. Of course if the person refuses to face the problem or has some form of dementia, family and friends will need help with strategies to evaluate or end their risky driving.

Several public seminars have been conducted to inform our community of the opportunities available to evaluate and improve their driving.  Information on alternative transportation was also provided.  Abbreviated presentations are available to small groups.  Organizations interested in scheduling a free half to full hour safe driver program are invited to call the Office for the Aging at 364-2105 for additional information.

The Safe Older Driver Consortium has identified and is working on several aspects of the necessary segments of safe driving in Rockland. They are:

  • Outreach, awareness and education for seniors, their families and the community at large,
  • Medical and physical issues,
  • Assessment and evaluation of current driving abilities and driver rehabilitation services,
  • Arranging alternatives for individual driving,
  • Identification of obstacles to safer driving and advocacy for public policy change.
